From a SEFE perspective there have been a number of important historical outcomes that have influenced what happens today.

The forests of South Eastern Australia, including those around Eden changed over long time periods from rainforest to forest dominated by eucalypts with a remnant rainforest presence.

Change brought about by factors which included long term climate change and Koori forest burning practices saw a low disturbance forest regime change into one that has a relatively high level of natural disturbance mainly from events such as wildfire.

The use of eucalypts for paper making had largely been pioneered in Australia prior to World War 2 and from the early 1970’s grew in general popularity. Eucalypts became the preferred fibre for production of papers such as copy, writing, fax and computer papers in southern hemisphere markets including Asia.

Paper usage grew strongly in the growth decades following World War 2 and Australia became an integral part of the resource chain as well as a user of the broad range of commercial papers.

The emergence of Eden as a supply point for forest products had occurred largely because of the presence of a deep, high quality natural harbour in Twofold Bay surrounded by hundreds of thousands of hectares of forests. The only location between Sydney and Melbourne with those qualities
